Flavour of Australia

Did you know that coffee is grown in Australia?

Whilst we may not have the lofty altitudes of other growing nations we do have a favourable tropical climate in northern NSW and Queensland to grow coffee commercially.

During a trip to Cairns in 2023 I was kindly invited onto Lucy's farm for a look behind the scenes at Crater Mountain Coffee.

Her family run farm is high up on the rich volcanic slopes of the Atherton Tablelands. Bourbon, Catuai and Caturra varieties of arabica are flourishing here and it is clear that a huge effort is going in to producing quality coffee.

Harvest occurs in the dry season and it had just wrapped up when I set foot on the farm in late October. Processing and drying of the coffee was still taking place however, so for the first time I could lay my eyes on coffee in its parchment and bite into a sweet cherry off the tree.

Fast forward three months and the best microlots from this 2023 harvest were offered to coffee roasters by way of a silent auction. It goes without saying that I just had to bid on these lots and was lucky enough to pick up Lucy's pulped natural.

Beck + Call Coffee has just released this coffee and it's a real privilege to share Crater Mountain Coffee with you. With less than 20kg of this microlot available however, you will need to be quick to secure your bag of Aussie grown goodness.
